SAFETY DESK: Have A Plan

Just when you think you have a great plan and are ready to go to work, something changes.

Do you stop and build a whole new plan? Or do you get started and figure it out later?

The more we plan our work (such as access) the better we can get our job done. When planning your work, always think of the following three things in this order - doing so will help you be more successful in all of your life:

  • ELIMINATION - Can the hazard be removed altogether?

  • SUBSTITUTION - Can a different or safer tool be used?

  • PROTECTION - PPE is the last line of defense and should never be your primary solution.

Congratulations, you just learned the hierarchy of control.

This is a safety engineering principle that can keep hazards from becoming injuries.
